Artistic Statement

As a Black, queer womanist, I get excited about the exploration of race, gender, and sexuality in my writing. My characters subvert gender roles and give voice to marginalized identities and non-mainstream experiences. My characters are less familiar to the canon; they are people that I want actors will be excited to research, explore, and embody.

The unapologetic black queerness of Nikki Giovanni, Audre Lorde, and June Jordan are my most treasured inspirations. Also influential to my work are Sam Greenlee’s methodical resistance to white supremacy, Ava DuVernay’s eye for breathtaking visual composition, and James Baldwin’s unrivaled intellectual acuity.

Humor is a dominant element of my storytelling, and I use it variably to disarm audiences and leave them available to appreciate our humanity across lines of difference. Yet, as I transcend shape, form, and genre, it is my attention to the complexities of intersectionality that makes my writing stand out.
