This is just the latest play by Willis that has absolutely broken my heart in the best possible way. I always feel seen in their words and imagination in a way that few, if any, other artists manage. And I urge you to produce this. To write this rec, I first looked for an especially good line to pull to show you just how much you should produce this play. But I couldn't find one. Truly, do yourself (and your heart) a favor and read it so you can love it as much as I do.

Sometimes you read a new play and you get hit with that feeling: this is going to be produced EVERYWHERE. And this play should. At turns I thought this couldn’t possibly happen and then I have been in the room where this happens. Danielle Mohlman is changing the world. You can feel her rage and her hope in every line. It also contains the single most punk rock moment I have ever read in a play. Read it, produce it. Be moved.

My skin crawled and I wept reading this play, and I can't even imagine what it would do on stage. It is so skillfully written that it carries a truly physical ache. I know every character here. I have been some of them, but I know all of them. This play is desperately relevant and must be produced.

Soldier Poet is a deeply felt, immediately relevant piece with beautifully heightened language. Each character has a specific voice. At turns, the reader is pulled to and compelled by each of them. I was lucky to have the opportunity to produce a reading of a 10 page selection of this play for an evening of political theatre, and this piece hit our audience profoundly. I hope to have the opportunity to see this play fully done asap -- or to produce it myself. Truly beautiful work (as usual) by Darcy Parker Bruce.
