"When I was growing up, many young women tried very hard to show that they were 'not like the other girls.' Movies, songs, and tv shows told us that women were silly, frilly, and delicate. Plus, women weren’t allowed to eat anything. I’m not sure that those women ever actually existed, but it certainly wasn’t productive to pit the girls who 'wear short skirts' against the girls who 'wear t-shirts.' In more recent years, I have been delighted to see more movies, songs, and tv shows celebrating women who support and encourage one another. These plays show much more positive dynamics between femme characters. Let’s show them some love!"—playwright Lainie Vansant
