The Snow Angel

by Andrew Martineau

(ONE ACT) On Christmas Eve, Vidalia, an eleven-year-old girl, is awakened by an intruder dressed as Santa Claus. He is taking her T.V., presumable to repair it. She doubts his assertions that he is, in fact, Santa, and she even finds that she craves his company. We also discover what happened the previous Christmas Eve when Vidalia's father was told to move out. At the end of the play, Glen leaves, but he shortly returns with a Christmas present for his new friend.

You know from the get-go what's going on and what's gonna happen. Then you find out, YOU'RE WRONG! Multiple imaginations are at work, specifically the playwright and his protagonist conspiring to fashion magic and memory. There are a few holiday tales going on at once, like unwrapping a present to find another present inside and another after that... only this time there's a gift in each box. Any sentimentality (and I mean, it's a Christmas story about a little girl so...) is balanced with working class strife and real world loss. Start unwrapping this one now!

What a charming, thoughtful narrative! A truly heartfelt piece with compelling characters, and an innocent storyline.

Martineau tells a lovely if somewhat gritty Christmas story that, like all good tales for the holiday, lets us decide for ourselves whether or not we believe in Santa Claus.
