Catherine II, the Empress of Russia, at 37 years old is still quite beautiful. Very well educated, with a wry sophistication which often derails a conversation, she holds power with her eyes which are rumored to read people's thoughts. An avid reader and fan of Voltaire and Tacitus, she is also as vigorous in her sensual pursuits. Dropped into this court is John Rogerson, 25 years old and a recent graduate from Medical Studies in Edinburgh Scotland. Thinking he is to be the court physician, he is stunned to discover that his task is to screen the future lovers of the Empress and ascertain that they are not infected with venereal disease. These men are passed on to outspoken Josefina, 23 years old, with a bright personality whose knowledge comes from hearsay since she cannot bear to read a book. She gives Catherine’s prospective lovers their love audition, reporting candidly on their technique and size. When Ladislav, 19 years old and handsome as sin, arrives, John Rogerson’s world begins to crack. . Is Ladislav teasing him? Could this Court allow such a love? Is it a trap?
