Seagulls

by Beth Hyland

Seagulls is an indie-rock musical loosely based on Anton Chekhov's The Seagull. This contemporary retelling of the classic tragicomedy follows four friends and bandmates at a small college as they struggle to achieve artistic greatness without losing themselves – or each other.

Saw this at Steppenwolf's outlook series, and it was a joy from start to finish. A deep dive into what it means to be an young artist who wants to make something that matters (and the self-destruction and isolation that can come out that desire) rendered with sharpness and empathy. It's funny, it's heartbreaking, and I'm going to have MUSE stuck in my head for a while.

I freakin' loved this show! I saw it twice in a fringe festival production at CMTF, and refused to shut up about it. It's very funny, very subtle, and very wise.

Between Stupid F*cking Bird and the upcoming film adaptation, Chekhov's The Seagull seems to be having a moment. This musical is one of the best takes on the Russian great's work that I have ever read. 4 complex and relatable characters ponder life and art and the songs are really well-written. Chekhov lovers will dig it but it also stands on it's own as just a really good play. Produce this now!!!
