This is up in Chicago now and I have so much FOMO so I’m glad I got to read it here. As someone who grew up relating to her family through movies, this play speaks to me on so many levels. It’s a bold idea, combining the stories of cultural obsession with a horror film, all with a scosh of Beckettian existential angst. At times, Peercy’s play reminded me of Anne Washburn’s Mr. Burns, a Post-Electric Play, in which the survivors of an unnamed catastrophe develop an entire near-cult around the “Cape Feare” episode of The Simpsons. There are also echoes of Craig Wright’s The Unseen, in which two prisoners in adjoining cells tell stories to pass the time.
