Immersion

by Julián Mesri

In a typical apartment in an American city, a group of post-collegiates play out their varied malaises while a Spanish lesson goes on behind them. But there are more than just foreign languages in the air. Strange things (and smells) are afoot, and soon their world begins to be taken over by another world (and family) in their apartment. But there are more than just foreign languages in the air. Strange things (and smells) are afoot, and soon their world begins to be taken over by another world (and family) in their apartment. Soon, as the rules change, and the scenes multiply and overlap, we find that our home is not what we think it is, and we ask ourselves: who is invading who? A dark bilingual comedy about who and how we mis-understand.

A spellbinding mysterious adventure as we try to figure out what is true and who we are in this thought provoking and riveting unfolding. Well done!

Playwrights Foundation enthusiastically recommends this play, IMMERSION, as a Semi-Finalist for the Bay Area Playwrights Festival 2020. We were moved by the quality of the writing and the relevant and compelling themes that spoke to the mission of our festival. It excelled in a competitive process of 735 plays submitted this year and rose to the top after a six month long process discussing its merits with both national and local Bay Area readers, and we hope it moves swiftly towards production.

I have never been more in love with a play. The way Mesri leads you on a journey and uses language to tell multiple stories at once. Every bit of this play is gorgeous. Each character is so well fleshed out and goes on a full adventure. Some plays are great to listen to, some are great to read. This is both. Read this play
