Old wounds and new points of view disrupt ministry efforts as queerness and the non-denominational movement collide.

Multiple times in this play, two seemingly separate perspectives about religion and queerness are smashed together, forcing the characters – and the audience – to try and reconcile with both views, and the result never ceases to shock. Tackling a lifetime of experiences into a play that is quick-paced and startlingly open-hearted, and told through three frustrating yet amiable characters, CHURCH HURT is a tour de force from Frauenhoffer, and well served by Black Cat Theatre's debut reading.

I connected with this play deeply. I know this church. I know these people. This is a play for all those out there that have struggled with having faith without condoning the hurt the Church has done. Frauenhoffer has written 3 excellent characters that are in no way stereotypes. They are so complex and rich characters. You may not agree with everything they do but you understand why. A generation of people that were indoctrinated by the Church and purity culture are coming out and expressing their hurts. I'm so glad we have plays like this to talk about it.
