"It's just a fun ad. Now the whole world is going crazy." In Singapore, Clearday(TM) has developed from a small start-up company to a leading international cosmetic brand in less than a year. But when a draft of the company's latest skin cream advert is leaked, the video goes viral globally for all the wrong reasons. YouTube views are in the thousands and keep climbing; anger is building on social media; and journalists are starting to cover the story. This is an international PR nightmare; the company cannot be seen to be racist, they've got to get it taken down before America wakes up.

White Pearl marks writer Anchuli Felicia King's international playwriting debut. It premiered in the Jerwood Theatre Downstairs at the Royal Court Theatre, London, on 10 May 2019 in a production directed by Nana Dakin. The same year, White Pearl had its Australian premiere in Sydney (a co-production between the National Theatre of Parramatta and Sydney Theatre company) and its American premiere in Washington D.C. at Studio Theatre.

REVIEWS:
'White Pearl is a little gem... This is a bracingly funny play that, like Caryl Churchill’s Top Girls, shows women are no more immune than men to capitalism’s insidious corruption.' - The Guardian

‘A scathing, gleefully nasty corporate satire’ - The Stage

'It has a boldness, ambition and acerbic humour on a scale that makes you sit up and pay attention.' - Time Out

'King’s writing has that quality where almost every line whip-cracks through the air and leaves a welt.' - The Upcoming

This play jumped off the page for me for many reasons: (1) The world of the play -- a Singapore-based international cosmetics company -- is unique; (2) the 7-person cast includes six wonderfully delineated women from different Asian backgrounds; (3) it explores racism and the impact of colonialism from fresh, new, non-Western perspectives; and (4) it's genuinely engaging, entertaining, provocative and FUNNY!
