that drive thru monterey

Inspired by the life of my mother. The story of a Mexican-American woman in 1971 Los Angeles as she experiences a first, nerdy love. Throughout the courtship, she experiences mysterious premonitions of what lies ahead in her life and how the ever’present machismo will ultimately bring her heartbreak as it gets passed down from fathers to sons; generation to generation.

I saw the world premiere production of that drive thru monterey Stages in Houston earlier this month, and I haven't been able to stop thinking about it. olmos has created a magic trick in this play; as monterey moves through the nonlinear river of her life, I felt as if I were watching my own life unfold. A beautiful, hopeful, tragic, devastating portrait of a resilient woman, washing the audience over in her memories. May this play have long life ahead of it.

A beautiful piece that centers around two human, lived-in characters and a touching, organically evolving relationship. I loved the combination of authentic humanity with lyrical language and moments of fantastical/theatrical visual storytelling. At the center of the piece is an exploration of the negative impacts of machismo/toxic masculinity, of how people struggle to avoid it, and of how it is passed down through generations. The historical context is also wonderfully threaded throughout, and I loved how richly built the world was with so few characters. Who we saw and who we didn't see...
