Palak Paneer

by J.Lois Diamond

Joe has just returned from serving in Afghanistan, and looks forward to a romantic Indian dinner with his wife Diane. Two loud older ladies enter the restaurant and abruptly alter the mood. A black comedy which explores how strangers are often forced to deal with one another in the city.

A very funny story about Joe and Diane, who are trying to have a lust-filled dinner at a restaurant, being interrupted by two older women talking bathroom talk. At the end a new restaurant guest, Richie, manages to halt their conversations - but most of the guests end up happy!

Social comedies like PALAK PANEER strike the funny bone because they're mostly true to life, just zanier. We recognize an off-kilter world - mature women like (loud) Myrtle and (less loud) Sydelle who want to trade intimate details of their bodily functions and a young couple Joe and Diane who start their lovemaking in public. J Lois Diamond demonstrates she knows well how to make you wince and crow with laughter at the same time, doubling the fun. I just finished the novel Infinite Jest and this play made me feel like it's a kindred naughty spirit. Big fun.

I always enjoy the humor in Diamond's plays. Even those ones which are more serious always have that spark that is hers. There's nothing like finding a common enemy to bring people together and Palak Paneer has this in the end but what holds this play together is the humor and how different people's perceptions are who are in the same space as you. Life is truly a joyous journey.
