Premiere Stages, the professional Equity theatre in residence at Kean University, is pleased to recognize “The Seekers” by Jeesun Choi as a Semi-Finalist for the 2023 Premiere Play Festival. “The Seekers” rose through a competitive selection process conducted by Premiere staff and a panel of outside theatre professionals to become one of 40 Semi-Finalists out of 701 submissions. The panel was particularly impressed by the power of the characters and their conflicts, as well as the deft weaving of numerous thematic threads. Our congratulations and thanks to Jeesun.

This is a thrilling, poetic, deeply-felt, moving play. The characters- mostly Somali immigrants living in modern Minneapolis- are so richly drawn that you feel each vacillation of their experiences as it is happening. Jeesun Choi builds a dark atmospheric world around these people, drawing the reader deeper with each new startling image.

"The Seekers" is an excellent character drama about a community not represented nearly enough on American stages, a political cry for climate justice, and a profound meditation on family, spirituality, love, and displacement all in one. It would be a great fit for any theater, large or small.
