Love I AWETHU Further

by a.k. payne

Callie been dreaming bout three days in which they may call up who they be beyond Mistress’ language, box, tomb and barrel, to dream beyond Mistress’ “woman.” From her plans drawn out between tobacco rows, come a collective: her twin, her friends, her nameless mother and ancestor. In this adaptation of Julius Caesar, seven plan a revolt in the Antebellum South.

I saw two readings of this play at the 2023 National Playwrights Conference, and the best word I can think of to describe it is alchemical—to experience a.k. payne’s writing is to hear what happens when language itself is melted down and recast. A full production is a must, but it’s also not enough—I’d like a recording on vinyl so I can close my eyes and listen to what can only be called poetry.

Deeply moving piece with stunning heightened language. A meditation on freedom for Black women of all walks of life, which is a near impossible task but I gotta say this comes pretty close to pulling it off.

I don't know how to even begin to describe this beautiful play, but it left me bereft. a.k is a remarkably gifted poet and storyteller. This is an unbelievably powerful play, and I'm excited to see it in production.
