Small Parties

by Alexandra Rogers

During one of Jay Gatsby’s famous parties (or infamous, depending on who you ask), Nick, Jordan, and Daisy all find refuge in the library. While tucked away from the masses, the conversations the trio have reveal deep personal secrets and desires, all while exploring just what it means to be happy.

I saw this show in 2021 and loved how "Small Parties" takes characters from The Great Gatsby and shines a new (green?) light on them. Between what is said and more importantly, what isn't, - Nick, Jordan, and Daisy all grapple with the dizzying cocktail that is friendship, love, and queerness in the 1920's.

Character Information

  • Nick Carraway
Nick is a Yale University graduate who quit his dream of being a writer and instead moved to New York to get into the stock market. He is anxious and often sticks out like a sore thumb among the high society folk he hangs around, no matter how he tries not to. The most empathetic and honest person in sight at almost all times.

  • Jordan Baker
Professional golfer and semi-professional gossip. She would like you to believe that she is eternally cool and collected. One can never quite tell if she is being sarcastic or not, and that's something she works hard at. She is rather self-centered sometimes but deep down this seems like an act. At least for now.

Nick's cousin and best friends with Jordan. Daisy is selectively naive and deceptively shallow.
