Matt has not been in touch since he joined the Marines in 1999. His life has been shattered by all that he has seen and done; he hopes that making peace with Jimmy, who was 10 when he left, will help to lift the depression that has overwhelmed him.
As the brothers drink and talk through the night, old pain and anger is released.
In order to make Jimmy understand why he ran off at 17 and never looked back, Matt is forced to recount the violence he witnessed in the woods near their farm: a traumatic memory buried long ago.
It is his brother’s love and ability to forgive that makes it possible for Matt to begin to heal and build a life once again.

Once again, Roberta Pyzel creates a powerful drama. Her characters are so clearly drawn, and her dialogue is so authentic that we often forget we are reading/seeing a play. It feels so real, and we know these people well. Easy to stage with a cast of just three... and yet it delivers a punch we will not soon forget.

  • Kim E. Ruyle: The Return

Two brothers, long separated, reunite, and the horrible truth about what instigated their separation is revealed. Pyzel so authentically captures the atmosphere and dialogue of the time and place. The relationship between Matt and Jimmy is real. It’s honest. It’s affectionate in the way brothers of that age can be without feeling tender or sentimental. The Return is a heart-rending story that ends with a tragic reveal.
