This hopeful story is presented with authentic, high stakes vulnerability. The emotional risks that accompany hard conversations in life are beautifully portrayed. David Taylor Little has written a delightful piece for us hopeless romantics!

Being a musical theatre fan, I loved all the references to show dates, and how it's a quirky organisational system for how key life dates are remembered. But what also stood out was in the set up before the play even started, where we are told that it was inspired by a true story, but a hopeful retelling, rather than truth. I found myself questioning, and hoping, the author found some of the silver lining and happiness that the characters found. It gave it a whole extra layer of depth.

    The General is a gem.

Peter and George are utterly believable as characters and a couple. They have incorporated one another into their lives, and display a detailed history. The complication is understandable and the resolution heartfelt, even gentle.

If you're looking for a depiction of love that does not fall into the common tropes, look here. It has a couple that has an honest-to-goodness love story, a tremendously vivid sense of place, and characters to root for.
