Unfolding against the backdrop of devastating current events, an unlikely friendship develops between 2 women of different cultures, different religions ¬– one a Muslim, the other a Jew –different generations and vastly different personalities. Set in Ukraine from just before the 2020 U.S. presidential election, informed by a growing, but ignored pandemic and finally, by Russia’s brutal invasion, we experience through Alla and Marina, the impact of catastrophic events on the lives of ordinary people whose hopes and dreams are stalled or dashed and ultimately, transformed.

While history plays out its savagery, and tragedy our protagonists learn volumes from each other and become their own new family.

Ukrainian Railroad Ladies Waiting for the Call blends dark humor, history, and humanity into a poignant exploration of identity, resilience, and survival. Through the conversations of two unforgettable women, the play illuminates the personal realities behind geopolitical conflict while never losing its wit or heart. A thoughtful, timely work that invites audiences to see both Ukraine and themselves through a new, fresh, compassionate, exciting lens.

This play is real heart-warmer, and so timely! The growing relationship between the two very different women illustrates for Americans that Ukraine is as diverse and conflicted as our own country, and that human connection is our only hope of salvation. I’ve read it and seen a public reading, and it’s powerfully moving! I wish the US Congress could see it!

This is a two-character play with a voiceover during the prelude
The two main characters are women, the older one, (50s) Ukrainian, the younger (20s) Muslim, from Kazakhstan, and Asian
The voiceover, preferably male, but not necessarily.
ALLA,19, fled the prospect of a crushing future in a small Kazakh village, propelled by her own big dreams of studying in America. MARINA is tied to the Railroad through her fierce patriotism and a lofty sense of purpose. The two bond over food, cooking, a constant clash of wills and shared humor and ultimately, find their devotion to each other outweighs all other external events.
