Not That Kind of Girl

Rachel invites a stranger into her place after she accidentally gives her a bloody nose. The stranger is Crystal, a woman decked out in full "scene" fashion, who speaks as though she's been in a coma since 2011. It becomes evident through the play that Crystal has no intention of leaving the apartment, despite Rachel's efforts to kick her out. (CW: SA, abuse)

In Bendici’s latest one-act, not only are difficult topics like abuse and assault handled with tact and clear intention, but also masterful use of black comedy and solid narrative structure. These elements are cathartic and vindicating for survivors, especially those whose stories don’t look like what society has deemed “typical.” Bendici also casts a harsh but necessary light on her audience members, asking them to confront their own biases. Zee is a gifted and invaluable voice in our theatrical landscape, and I am happy to give her and her new piece my highest recommendation.

This play is a masterpiece of opposites. It is raw but absurd; it is violent and unsettling, and at the same time hilarious and inviting. Bendici expertly pairs Rachel, a young trans woman who is complex and vulnerable, with the eccentric and assertive Crystal, who is the perfect embodiment of a 2010's emo Tumblr girlie. Funny and dangerous, irreverent and tender, this play will keep you on the edge of your seat. It is truly one of a kind.

Rachel must be played by a trans woman. Also this play MUST have an intimacy coordinator in production.
