SULLY'S JOURNEY

(One act play.) A tabby cat. A brown howler monkey. A basset hound. And a lovable little lab mouse. Fate brought them together, and perhaps it will allow them to save each other. Escape from the prison that holds them is only the beginning of the adventure for the young mouse Sully and his new friends Jerry, Nina, and Margie. Along the way, they'll face mutated ravens, demonic feral cats, and the ever present specter of the lab they escaped from as they try to make it to "The Safe Place"... before it's too late. SULLY'S JOURNEY begins with a single step into darkness but ultimately shines with the light of the power of friendship and community.

A multi-faceted story with a lot of great banter! Some fun anthropomorphic animals with their own unique personalities that are all fantastic opportunities for blooming character actors to sink their paws into!

Character Information

It is suggested that you have at least 3 other RAVENS to support SEBASTIAN (perhaps no more than 7) to at least make it seem slightly overwhelming to our main foursome in that scene. Any of the RAVENS could double as one of the three FERAL CATS or perhaps even SANDY or the BEACH MOUSE, depending on actor size. You could also use any of the RAVENS or CATS as the offstage voices as well. It is not suggested to have any of the main foursome double with other roles.
  • Lucy (of the Fur)
Lucy is the leader of three feral cats that Sully runs into once he escapes the terror of Sebastian and his ravens. Seductive but evil, Lucy's tragic back story of being abandoned by her owner(s) by no means excuses what she tries to perpetrate on two of our heroic foursome but it does definitely explain it.
    Character Age
Any Age (though probably needs to be an adult actor)

    Any gender (but probably woman)
  • Bill (Feral Cat)
The largest of the feral cats... a rather unpleasant cat, which is saying something considering the company he keeps.

  • Ibble (Feral Cat)
Ibble is not as mean as Bill and not as seductively evil as Lucy, instead maintaining a middle ground of portraying a good nature that only hides a nastiness beneath.

Any gender (but apply the appropriate pronouns)
  • Jerry
A tabby lab cat who has pretty much lived all his life in the lab. For that reason, some may consider him a bit "soft" compared to the feral cats that come later. However, Jerry proves himself over time to be fiercely loyal to his fellow lab mates and even surprises himself in terms of what he's able to do when it comes to helping Sully on his journey.
    Character Age
    Adult, 20's-50's.

  • Margie
Margie is an older and wiser basset hound who has also spent most of her life in the lab but luckily has never lost her loving nature. She becomes sort of a surrogate mother to Sully and is also willing to do whatever it takes to protect him once their journey begins.

    Character Gender Identity

  • Nina
Nina was taken from South America and brought to the lab and perhaps has suffered the most of the foursome we discover there. The subject of hideous and hurtful experiments to increase her intelligence, the treatments have in fact backfired and left her with sometimes uncontrollable spasms and now, sadly, memory loss. Still, she remains determined to find a way back to her home before it's too late. She is hardened by life at first but softens a bit when engaging with the innocent Sully.
    Character Age
A lab brown howler monkey. Probably an adult actor to portray her.
    Character Race/Ethnic Identity
    Any Race/Ethnicity
    Character Gender Identity
    Any gender
  • Sebastian
Sebastian definitely represents the darkest side of animal experimentation, as the experiments made him grow not only in size but in malevolence as well. He then made sure to procreate quickly, producing monstrous offspring who accompany him everywhere. He and his conspiracy of ravens represent a real threat to our heroic foursome in the middle of the play. He is well spoken and sinister but also capable of great harm as well, as the scene with them will show.
    Character Age
Any age (though probably needs to be an adult actor of some stature to be properly intimidating to the rest of the characters)
    Character Race/Ethnic Identity
    Any Race/Ethnicity
    Character Gender Identity
    Any gender
