Anton Chekhov's "The Seagull" adapted for 6 actors.
A darkly tragic comedy, "The Seagull" takes place at the summer home of fading star, Irina, and her brooding playwright son, Konstantine. When Irina arrives with her new lover, the handsome and successful writer Trigorin, Konstantine's beloved Nina (an aspiring actress herself) finds herself drawn to him. Meanwhile, the ever present and ever melancholy Masha pines after Konstantine while pursued by working-class Medvedenko.
While it attained it's fame and status as a tragedy (when it was directed by the great Stanislavski), Chekhov originally envisioned "The Seagull" as a comedy. Modernization of language and streamlining of story lines are used to clarify the work as a dark class-comedy for a modern audience. This adaptation, running roughly an hour and a half with intermission, embraces the satire and melodrama of the original while adopting a more modern sensibility, creating a world that lives in the "heightened" now.
