SKYLIGHT THEATRE COMPANY was created to support artists. Recognized as a “powerhouse of new play development” by Dramatist Magazine, the 36 year-old company discovers, develops and produces compelling new works that expand the boundaries of mainstream theatre through the telling of relevant and more inclusive stories, and nurtures and educates the people that create them. Plays premiering at Skylight have gone on to be performed Off Broadway, nationally and internationally, and its vibrant artist family has received national and local awards including the prestigious Steinberg National Theatre Critics Citation (“Dontrell, Who Kissed The Sea” – Nathan Alan Davis; NNPN Rolling World Premiere produced in association with Lower Depth Theatre Ensemble.) In 2019, Skylight’s multi-award winning production of “Rotterdam” by the Olivier Award winning Jon Brittain, was produced by Center Theatre Group at the Kirk Douglas Theatre. In the same year they produced their first world premiere musical, "Bronco Billy - The Musical" to critical and popular acclaim. After producing over 100 World Premieres, and working with hundreds of teens and young adults, Skylight remains dedicated to the power of the artist to create positive change.
Skylight’s resident professional writers PlayLAb, helmed by Pulitzer Prize Finalist and Tony Award nominee Lee Blessing, includes alumni that have enjoyed productions nationwide, the prestigious USA Ford Fellowship in Theater and Performance (Sigrid Gilmer, 2014), and a winner in the Humanitas/CTG Playwriting Prize winner (Louisa Hill, 2015 – Lord of the Underworld’s Home for Unwed Mothers). The INKubator Play Reading Series provides and open and blind submission entry point into Skylight's Artistic Development Program, while their Beyond Conversation stage talk series brings special guests and audiences together to discuss topics suggested by the current production.
Skylight produces Equity and non-Equity productions in the 99-seat intimate Skylight Theatre in Los Angeles, California. More information about Skylight's programs and productions can be found online.
