Renaissance Theaterworks' (RTW's) mission is to create moving theater that awakens our recognition of what it is to be human - from classics to world premieres - with attention to women's roles onstage and off. RTW is Milwaukee's only women-founded, women-run theatre company.
In 2013, RTW started Br!NK - A new play development residency for Midwestern Women Playwrights. Each playwright who receives the Br!NK Award gets a week-long workshop with a director, dramaturg, and full cast; and four staged readings with monitored talkbacks following each one. Two of the readings are toured to outlying communities around Milwaukee and two are in our space at the Broadway Theatre Center.
Renaissance Theaterworks was founded in 1993 by Suzan Fete, Marie Kohler, Raeleen McMillion, Jennifer Rupp and Michele Traband. Around Marie's kitchen table, these five "Renaissance Women" conceptualized the theatre company that Milwaukee audiences have come to treasure. The formation of RTW was meant to address the lack of professional opportunities available to women in theatre. RTW is inclusive in its hiring practices and uses the talents of both men and women in their productions, administration and board of directors.
Renaissance Theaterworks prides itself on our accomplishments towards improving gender parity for Milwaukee theater and beyond.
