This version of "A Christmas Carol" is a faithful adaptation of the entire original novella. It is an attempt to remain true to Dickens’ subtitle of "A Christmas Carol" as “a ghost story of Christmas.” It is an adaptation of "A Christmas Carol" for those who wish to dispense with the clichés and sentimentality which have grown up around Dickens’s story in the past couple of centuries, and recapture the original and authentic sound and feel of the 1843 novella – in particular, the novella’s emphasis upon the poor and the downtrodden, and the greed and selfishness of the business classes, in the hard and grimy world of early Industrial Age England -- but which the Christmas spirit breaks through with love, joy, and cheer. This is *not* a "play-within-a-play" staging of a "from our broadcast studio" 1940s production of "A Christmas Carol." It is a continuous, nonstop, immersive, impressionistic dramatic rendition of the original novella. The desired effect is, as in the novella, a constant swirl of activity surrounding, including, and transforming Ebenezer Scrooge. The script is ideal for a high school or college theater group to produce. Any performance of this script must include as a credit on-air or in programs or promotional materials that the novella was adapted for radio by Mark Lowe (rhymes with NOW).
