Publishing's it-girl, Caro X. Wilson, introduces her debut novel, JENNA, "a lust story" topping the New York Times Bestseller list, and talk of the Booker Prize on everyone's lips. At the book launch, the woman who inspired the novel is unexpectantly in attendance--and irate. When the evening brings them to Caro's hotel room, the two women finally discuss what happened between them ten years ago, and what can (or should) be done about it now.

I can count on one hand the number of times I've wound up reading a play in one sitting. Add one to the list. Martin's dialogue and stage direction crackle off the page and burrow into your very marrow. When the art's real-life inspiration is too clear, the ethical minefield can be staggering...but add in the lust and anger and fear and longing simmering between these two towering characters? Incredible piece of theatre with two tour-de-force performance opportunities. Highly recommended.

This play is a real mind-fuck. It's also very sexy. Martin does a great job at writing longing. There is so much going on between these two characters. There are feelings of anger, resentment, curiosity. lust and (like I mentioned above) lots and lots of longing. I loved how this book explores the ethics behind creating a work of art based on true events. What responsibility does a writer have to the person they are writing about? I loved how this play explores the spectrum of queerness. This play has amazing roles for actresses.

A love story within a mystery, a mystery within a love story, or something else entirely? Martin folds narratives within narratives in "Gemma," unraveling the complexity of power dynamics and daring the audience to find the truth. Martin's razor-sharp wit makes a banquet of conflict, and the tension they build will have you glancing over your shoulder to see who is glancing back.

CARO - cis woman, same race as Gemma. Novelist in her 30s. Queer on sight. One weakness.
GEMMA - cis woman in her 50s, same race as Caro. Didn’t used to be so fragile.
JO - 50s, probably white, cis woman. Crunchy but monied. Straight as an arrow, but nobody asks.
