Humans bid farewell to people, places, and things for a plethora of reasons and in countless ways leading them to places of gratitude, shame, anger, joy, grace, fear, and reconciliation. The Way We Say Goodbye, a collage of monologues with varying degrees of separation, introduces us to fourteen women. These rich characters celebrate, mourn and sometimes cluelessly navigate farewells clearing paths to the subsequent chapters of their lives.

The play can be performed with as many as fourteen women or as few as two or three who play multiple roles. Excellent script for community theatres and university programs. Rehearsal structure is flexible. Because this is a monologue play, actors can be rehearsed individually, virtually and on their own schedules until interactive blocking takes place. At one and a half to two weeks prior to production, the ensemble will need to rehearse together.

Sets can be minimal or elaborate.

To date since November 2022, the play has been produced in full or part by Southeastern Louisiana University, Mirrorbox Theatre (Cedar Rapids) and Metro State University (Minneapolis).

"The Way We Say Goodbye" by Donna Gay Anderson is a kaleidoscope of laughter, drama, and heart. Imagine a world where every line crackles with wit, characters leap off the stage into your imagination, and the plot twists like a pretzel, deliciously unpredictable! It's a standing ovation kind of night where the only thing better than the performance is the joy it sparks in your soul. So grab your ticket, take a seat, and let the magic unfold. This isn't just a play, it's a celebration of the human spirit! Great work.
