Get In The Fucking Robot

TEN MINUTE: It's been months since Ed has returned to his work as a pilot. Months since he last spoke with his friend Kym. Months since the sky fell, and yet... today feels eerily calm. Kym is meeting Ed for coffee. He seems good. Better than good. That can't be good.

A not-so-subtle tribute to the works of Hideaki Anno.

Alternative Title: Eleven Minutes After Midnight

To put it simply, this play rules. Heyman delivers a harrowing showcase of how friendship and love can be manipulated and weaponized by emotionless hierarchies, and how in attempting to protect those we love, we can easily suture ourselves to dilemmas that force us to literally confront the sacrifices that come with heroism and responsibility. Fascinating stuff!

Sam has a gift for creating plays about what it is to be human. In this case he takes the horror of war and PTSD and presents you with a snapshot of how it affects people. Ed has suffered much in the ways of loss and is consumed by guilt, all of which feels very real as he faces what happened to his friend Kym and the prospect of having to return to that war, for the greater good. This is a play that offers great pace, intrigue and emotion. Its sure to see audiences discussing it afterwards!

What a mysterious and intriguing play! I was drawn to GET IN THE FUCKING ROBOT by the provocative title. And by the conclusion, Sam Heyman satisfies my curiosity and more. I’ve learned how effective a short sci-fi play can be where much is left to the imagination, where a sketchy world gradually comes into greater focus through emotional truth and inner conflict. Ed’s rehabilitation by Ozma is a reminder of those in the past, present, and future have gotten past their fears to protect. A remarkable play,
