The Island

Two young couples grapple with love and war on one island, centuries apart.

(or: what if The Iliad and Mamma Mia took place on the same island?)

  • Branna Sundy: The Island

Gorgeously imagined with very strong relationships. Richardson's characters dance across time, exploring the battle between duty and desire with a subtle poetry. The way the two stories mirror each other is truly heartbreaking and yet affirms how miraculous it is that love persists in spite of everything. A beautifully crafted work of art.

Richardson strikes the perfect balance between beauty & destruction, innocence & forced maturity, and romance & tragedy in this play. There is a certain tenderness in the characters' dialogue and brutality in its social relevance that make it such a gem. Highly recommend for Greek mythology fans and the uninitiated alike.
