Yom Kippur Abortion

Written by Shira Gorelick

Performed at 49th Annual Samuel French OOB Festival

After spending most of the holiday at the abortion clinic together, Tova and Mel watch the closing service of Yom Kippur virtually. While Tova recovers from her surgical procedure, the mother and daughter pair unintentionally step into intergenerational disagreements and unresolved emotional territory.

Such a powerful play! So profound and layered.

The relationship between Tova and Mel is fascinating. I was so taken by the journey they took - from talking at each other to truly listening. Shira’s ability to authentically interweave dialogue about such serious trauma with wit and comedy really stood out to me. I found Tova’s character to be particularly layered and interesting to follow.

Setting the story on Yom Kippur added so much depth and made the ending of the play even more meaningful.
