Tremolo

Nicola, Con, Sorel, Paulie, Masha, Devyn, Alex, and Nina are old friends. Every summer they spend a week on Sorel and Paulie's dock talking about theater and dykes and sex and aging and the loons that circle below. This is the last summer they’ll ever do this, but they don’t know that yet. Anyway. Tonight Con’s making everyone listen to their new play. ( They seem better this year, right?)

A love song to ambition, art-making, and heartbreak,“Tremolo” is at once a radical queer reimagining of Chekhov’s “The Seagull” set on the dock of a dark lake--and a singular exploration of an intergenerational found family on the precipice of great loss.

Moro has written a stunning piece of theatre that is a brilliant take on Chekhov's The Seagull and a heartbreaking love letter to chosen family in queer communities. I loved how intergenerational this play is and how everyone has so much to learn from each other. The dialogue is pure fire as discussion topics shift from sex to the power of art. I can't wait to see this produced. Give Chekhov a rest and produce this play instead. This lake is its own character and I loved the atmosphere it creates. This will be a blast for a sound designer.

Character Information

*Pronouns are suggestions–any female, non-binary, or transgender individual who identifies with queer womanhood in any way, shape, or form can play these parts. *
  • Con
they/them, 30s, an eternally emerging playwright. A passionate, dynamic, volatile depressive with mood swings like those boat rides at carnivals. It’s dark in there.
  • Nicola
she/her, 50s, by all accounts a pretty successful actress! Magnetic, formidable, intuitive- also flighty, self-absorbed. Bright sheen of glamour with steel underneath. Don’t fuck with her.
  • Nina
she/her or they/them, 20s, an aspiring actor. Luminous and quick, with deep wells of desire and ambition she’s not sure how to hold. A dangerous recklessness simmering below.
  • Alex
she/her or they/them, 40s, a widely acclaimed, award-winning novelist. Cool, perceptive, playful, sly. A hot, manipulative little fucker. Rough childhood, but you didn’t hear it from her.
  • Sorel
she/her, 70s, a retired college professor. Erudite, magnanimous, gracefully direct, stubborn. Doesn’t suffer fools easily. Unafraid of looking at what’s dark and hard and true.
  • Paulie
she/her, 70s, a joyfully retired butch, likely a spotty employment history? Rough around the edges, but hilarious and loving and beloved. Sometimes willfully oblivious and/or drunk.
  • Masha
she/her or they/them, 30s, a PA. Sardonic and wry, caustic and defensive, tongue like a switchblade, vape in hand. Feigned cool girl apathy masking deep sensitivity and a soft heart.
  • Devyn
they/them, 30s, a middle school drama teacher. Gregarious, loyal, endearing. Cries at movies, totally plays frisbee. Insecure, but nobody’s fool. And when they’re done, they’re done.
