Martin has given us quite a compelling look into the lives of two partners who are wrestling with vastly different needs. On one hand, Doug's choice to dig a hole and withdraw from the above-world reflects how people will often create unhealthy/extreme barriers to protect themselves. On the other hand, this creates a challenge for Lynn who doesn't want to enable his boyfriends detachment from the world, and instead, wants them to confront the difficulties of life together. Really great stuff.

Oh Doug. I can relate to wanting to escape from everything, yet cling to the one thing that brings comfort and joy. Doug takes it to the extreme and Lynn just can't relate. Doug puts everything on the line and shows all of his cards to Lynn. If only Lynn would listen beyond the hum of the generator in Doug's tunnel. This is a heartbreaker. An adorable and quirky heartbreaker.
