Good Neighbors takes place entirely on the porch of a townhouse over the course of 13 months surrounding the budding relationship between Sam and Kyle and their heterosexual neighbors Callie and Preston. Callie and Preston's penchant for decoration becomes an issue when cute Halloween decorations and American flags become inflatable Christmas menageries, explosions of Shamrocks all over the property, and a Virgin Mary statue that comes out only when Callie's mom is expected to visit. In the era of Flag-gate, appropriative decor, and hyper-polarization, Good Neighbors begs the question, what do our lawn ornaments say about us and to our neighbors? Is there a middle ground, a place for balance, or does a symbol draw a hard line in the sand?

Good Neighbors is a nuanced and witty play that makes choosing a "side of the fence" not as easy as one might think. Kyler Taustin DePasquale creates a world that is as hilarious as it is relatable in his conceit of the domestic holiday decor gone wild! The perpetrators and victims of such decor are much more three dimensional than the giant inflatable Christmas minion that separates them. The play explores identity and asks the question: what do we really owe to each other?

An incredibly thoughtful and hilarious play. Taustin DePasquale writes such honest characters, which makes it challenging when you want to root for AND against them. I think that's what makes this play so powerful -- it's hard to pinpoint who really is in the wrong. It would leave an audience plenty to discuss on the drive home from the theater. Worthy of many productions!
