Wealthy eccentric Eleanor Blackwood stages her death to test her two nephews - anxious English teacher Thomas and pompous financial advisor Richard - to determine who deserves her substantial fortune. The nephews, complete opposites who have never gotten along, arrive at Eleanor's sprawling New England mansion, where her sardonic housekeeper Greta informs them of their aunt's "passing."
Family lawyer Marcus announces Eleanor's unusual last wishes: the nephews must complete a series of challenges over 48 hours to determine who inherits her $28 million estate. The first test had them select the object that meant most to Eleanor. Richard chooses valuable family jewels, while Thomas selects her journal, revealing the first glimpse of their true values.
Complications arise when Eleanor's second test involves caring for six demanding seniors temporarily displaced from a local retirement home. Thomas rises to the occasion with help from his practical girlfriend Sophia, while Richard initially flees to a hotel. When a water pipe bursts, threatening Eleanor's valuable art collection, the cousins must work together, revealing hidden depths in Richard and newfound confidence in Thomas.
At the climax, a video reveals that Eleanor is alive and orchestrates the entire scenario to teach her nephews valuable life lessons. The inheritance will be shared equally between them, with each assigned responsibilities suited to their strengths - Thomas will oversee Eleanor's charitable foundation while Richard will manage the financial assets.
As the play concludes, relationships have transformed: the cousins develop mutual respect, Richard rediscovers his passion for art, Thomas gains confidence, and Marcus and Greta embark on a long-overdue romance. Eleanor returns from her "cruise" to find her scheme has exceeded her expectations, proving that family connections are the most valuable inheritance.
