A Charmed Life, a semifinalist for the 2026 National Playwrights Conference at the Eugene O’Neill Theater Center, follows Evelyn Jameson, a transgender woman living with advancing dementia, as she is moved to a lower-level elder-care facility and her world begins to split between daily routines and vivid visitations from her past.

Her daughter Bea fights to protect her mother’s dignity as they encounter bureaucratic indifference, while Agnes, the protocol-driven caregiver assigned to Evelyn, begins to question what care truly means.

Through humor, tenderness, and the blurred space between memory and imagination, A Charmed Life follows three women learning to see one another more clearly as Evelyn’s world narrows and time runs short.

"A Charmed Life" infuses the traditional memory play through the lens of dementia, giving this play a beautiful ying and yang quality to it. It's always lovely to see a marginalized character be given the spotlight in tackling such an intense subject matter, and Eden Lake crafts Evelyn with such precision and care that the end result leaves a lasting impact. This is a play that deserves to be recognized, especially since the lives of the older LGBTQ+ generation are not typically on display.

EDEN LANE’s full-length play, “A Charmed Life”, is a moving story. We watch Bea, an adopted daughter, deal with her mother’s dementia. But there is so much more. Bea’s mother is a transgender woman, who has struggled to be recognized for whom she is. We experience moments from her mother’s past, which shaped her and informed her. There is also the caregiver, who has a wonderful ‘awakening’. I absolutely loved this play. I strongly recommend it. BRAVO!!!
