The Latinx Playwrights Circle started as a "pop up" Playwright Circle organized by Chicago playwrights Nancy García Loza and Isaac Gomez in October 2017. The Latinx Playwrights Circle started as a "pop up" Playwright Circle organized by Chicago playwrights Nancy García Loza and Isaac Gomez in October 2017. Since 2018, the group has been spearheaded and organized by playwrights Guadalís Del Carmen (Ars Nova Resident Artist) and Oscar A. L. Cabrera (The Public Emerging Writers Group) with Janio Marrero serving as the Executive Director. Their mission is to to build a network of LatinX Playwrights nationwide in order to promote, develop and elevate their work while making their plays accessible to theater makers looking to find the next generation of American Storytellers.
At the heart of the mission is nurturing and uplifting playwrights through community development of their plays. Their recent programs like the Greater Good Festival and The Intensive Mentorship Program connect playwrights to the American Theatre at large by showcasing the diversity of Latinx voices rarely represent on stage.
In 2020, the LPC became a 501c3 non-profit while curating digital programming and community events throughout the ongoing pandemic. The rest of the staff includes: Nelson Diaz-Marcano, Literary Manger; Alisha Espinosa, Producing Artistic Director; Darrel Alejandro Holnes, Director of Strategic Initiatives; and Rebecca Aparicio, Grant Manager/Artist-In-Residence. The group is mentored by C. Julian Jiménez, Migdalia Cruz, Carmen Rivera, and Cándido Tirado.
