Barter Theatre

About the Organization

Founded by Robert Porterfield in 1933, Barter Theatre is the State Theatre of Virginia and a founding member of LORT.

We are a resident/repertory company that produces 15-20 productions/year in two spaces: Barter's Gilliam Stage (500 seat proscenium) and Barter's Smith Theatre (170 seat thrust).

Home of the Appalachian Festival of Plays and Playwrights--a new play festival dedicated to developing and producing new Appalachian Plays. For more info on the festival:
