City Theatre is a not-for-profit professional theatre company founded in Miami, Florida in February 1996. It is the only professional theatre in the country dedicated to the development and production of short plays and short musicals, written by the nation’s established and emerging playwrights. City Theatre selects work for its productions and programs from numerous sources including: submissions to its City Theatre National Award for Short Playwriting Contest, submissions through NPX, publications, partnerships and commissions.
City Theatre's main producing home is the Carnival Studio Theatre in the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts in downtown Miami, but the company also presents its work at theatres, schools and neighborhood venues in the South Florida region, and onboard Azamara Club Cruises.

City Theatre produces shorts year round and for all ages in an array of programming: the annual SUMMER SHORTS Festival (month of June), the WINTER SHORTS production (December), the SHORTS GONE WILD LGBTQ production with Island City Stage (month of August), the CITY SHORTS regional tour (various venues year round), SHORT CUTS Miami Middle School Tour (winter-spring), and in 2018 the world-wide launch of City Theatre's SHORTS ON SHIPS productions aboard Azamara Club Cruises (RCCL).

Since its inception, City Theatre has sought to increase the visibility of the short form genre, and provide opportunities for playwrights with productions, commissions, and development, educational and artistic outreach initiatives such as: a regional free reading series, the NextGen student playwright program, and CITYWRIGHTS, featuring a weekend symposium of creative and professional development for playwrights and theatre industry leadership as part of the SUMMER SHORTS Festival, and occasional year round workshops and presentations. In 2015 City Theatre published its first City Theatre Anthology. City Theatre has a commitment to its diverse South Florida community, with multicultural casts and plays that might be bilingual and feature the stories and experiences of its various populations.

In addition to shorts, City Theatre on occasion produces full length work. Productions include the NNPN Rolling World Premiere of BUILDING THE WALL by Robert Schenkkan, family musicals including THE AMAZING ADVENTURES OF DR. WONDERFUL AND HER DOG by Lauren Gunderson and Brian Loudermilk, CAMP KAPPAWANA a commission by Lisa Loeb, Michelle Lewis, Dan Petty and Marco Ramirez, and HIGH DIVE by Leslie Ayvazian. It is presently developing more of this programming.
