For over two decades, TeCo has been an artistic home for the current generation of audiences and acclaimed writers, actors, directors, and designers working in theatre. TeCo has become increasingly responsive to the community, producing work that reflects and celebrates the strength of our diversity.
TeCo was founded in 1993 in Atlanta and relocated to Dallas in January 2000. We began performing a full season of shows in Dallas at the Hall of State in Fair Park in 2002. An unused but historic building was donated to the organization in 2005, and renovations began in December 2006 and, despite a downward spiral economy, were completed in June 2008 (the building was erected in 1917 as a silent movie house). The refurbished Bishop Arts Theatre Center is a state-of-the-art, 10,000 square foot, 170 seat proscenium theatre with dressing rooms, executive offices, an art gallery, a learning laboratory and an arts business incubator center.
We have worked to reclaim the word ‘excellence’ from its historic, elitist undertones to recognize that the very best art and culture is for everyone. We believe that we are reaching toward artistic excellence if our work helps our community make sense of our place in the world, ask questions, and appreciate things they have never before experienced. Our neighborhood is heavily influenced by Hispanic, African American, and LGBT cultures. This creates a unique platform to creatively tell stories about our cultural experiences. Our organization and our artists embrace diversity at the core of our work as we strive to be relevant to 21st century American audiences.
TeCo offers:
