Tokens of Promise

There’s only one open “diversity” analyst position at this start-up. And the minorities must duke it out to access the sweet privilege of employment. A wicked satire about the modern-day job search and scarcity mentality, Ada A.’s new play exposes the inherent competition in employment that leads us to forsake our humanity out of necessity and survival.

The community of national and local readers for the 45th annual Bay Area Playwrights Festival in 2022 enthusiastically recommends TOKENS OF PROMISE as a Semi-Finalist at Playwrights Foundation. We were deeply moved by the exploration of satire to address the complex issues of equity in hiring practices. We were compelled by the promise in this play’s multi-layered characters and momentum, using an over-the-top satirical lens in order to show the truths about how race, class and gender intersect in the concrete jungle. We hope this play is widely read, find dedicated collaborators, and moves swiftly towards production. #BAPF2022.
