Pride and Prejudice and Perms

It's 1987 and Lizzie Bennett has a lot on her plate: annoying little sisters, an overbearing mother, crazy teachers, not to mention the preppy Will Darcy, a recent transfer from a local private school. Along with her best friends Jane and Charlotte, Lizzie navigates the tempestuous world of high school, boys, and really big hair in this campy adaptation of Jane Austen's classic novel.

This was a very enjoyable read. Brown's play manages to keep the spirit of the world of Jane Austen's original story, while vaulting it into modern day. The characters are charming and engaging - and it would provide an excellent introduction to High School students that might not yet have been exposed to the original novel. Perfect for Universities, High Schools, or for theatres that are looking for name recognition pieces, but are willing to do a slightly different take. Highly recommended. This is a playwright to keep an eye on.
