Being Seen

An actor answers an audition notice and encounters a highly acclaimed director who is perhaps more than they can handle. Wits and instincts collide as the actor maneuvers through the web of the director's process. A fast-paced comedy with a dark underbelly.

About a breed of cruelty that most dreamers and strivers have experienced at least once, Being Seen is theatrical, compelling, challenging, hilarious, a little bit heartbreaking, simple to stage, and has two delicious roles for actors. The themes in this complex but thoroughly engaging play will be recognizable, not just to people in the arts, but to anyone who has struggled with power.

Richard Gustin has written a sparkling two-hander with a to-die-for role for a female actor. A director puts an auditioning actor through tortuous paces which could only be conceived of and so deftly described by a consummate actor. This is a real treat for theatre aficionados – there’s so much inside baseball. But the sharpness of the dialogue, the dynamics that play out between actor and director, and the surprising ending will have the uninitiated hanging on every line of dialogue, as well. Really, really fantastic work – gets my highest recommendation.

I had a lot of fun watching an actor who just wants to please and a director who just wants to find out what this actor learned on her Grotowski retreat trade words during the actor's audition. I enjoyed the verbal sparring, and with a cast of two and very minimal set and tech requirements, this would be an easy play for any theater company to stage.
