A Thousand Shapes

by Barrie Kreinik

The lives of three university women - a professor, a PhD candidate, and a freshman - grow dangerously entangled as they study the romantic friendship of Virginia Woolf and Vita Sackville-West. Boundaries are crossed and illusions shattered as the women confront the question: when do our labels become our limitations? And how many shapes can love really take?

I was enthralled by this story. I loved the world, the characters, the movement between two times, the beautiful language. It was nuanced with thoughtful details; a perfect accompaniment for exploring complex feelings surrounding love and relationships. I loved that the story arc was about each character's growth and not about a particular outcome. The storytelling took the characters where they needed to go.

Playwrights Foundation enthusiastically recommends this play, A THOUSAND SHAPES, as a Semi-Finalist for the Bay Area Playwrights Festival 2020. We were moved by the quality of the writing and the relevant and compelling themes that spoke to the mission of our festival. It excelled in a competitive process of 735 plays submitted this year and rose to the top after a six month long process discussing its merits with both national and local Bay Area readers, and we hope it moves swiftly towards production.
