Wipeout

by Aurora Real de Asua

Three retired best friends. One hotrod surf instructor. The currents of the Pacific Ocean. What could possibly go wrong? Set on surfboards, WIPEOUT is a poignant comedy about friendship, grief, and the unpredictable tides of life.

A brilliant story told in real time.  A play about long-time friends and how important it is to grow old with people you love.  This is a play that features characters that we just don't see on stage that often.  Loved how complex these characters were and how they are so much deeper than we originally assume.  A hysterical and moving play that I'd love to see produced soon.

I had the privilege of experiencing the Rivendell Theatre Ensemble production earlier this year, and it is no wonder that a theatre centered on the lives and stories of women like Rivendell would pick de Asua's play up. A poignant take on a not often explored kind of female friendship—the multi-decade long friendship—WIPEOUT grabs your attention from the beginning and holds you till the bittersweet end. The three women each possess distinct personalities that make for deep character studies. I know this play has a much greater future ahead of what it has already achieved!

Wipeout offers a hilarious, nuanced and compelling take on long-term female friendships and intergenerational learning. Set during a surfing lesson in the Pacific, the story plays out entirely aboard surfboards. The three novice surfers are all women in their 60s-70s. Friends forever, their experiences and discussions in the water—about everything from love to aging to conquering fear and living life fully while they’re alive—are raw because the ocean is unpredictable; it exposes them as it exposes us all. It's rare to find such conversations in art, but, with remarkable grace, Wipeout brings...
