THE HOMECOMING QUEEN

A bestselling novelist returns to Nigeria to care for her ailing father, but before she can bury him, she must relearn the traditions she’s long forgotten. Having been absent for over a decade, she must collide with her culture, traumatic past, painful regrets, and the deep, deep love she thought she could never have.

I had the privilege of catching the stunning Powerhouse reading of the play, and then the production at the Atlantic. A challenging, intricately woven story that had me laughing and crying in equal measure. The penultimate and final scenes of this play shook me, and I will not soon forget them.

This play took my breath away. Anyanwu tackles such huge, complex subjects -- trauma and mental illness, the disorientation of returning home, the loss of family -- with such ease and poetry. One of the most beautiful, theatrical endings I've read in some time. This play will break your heart and then prove to you it can be mended. Absolutely stunning.
