STEW

The Tucker women are up early to prepare a very important meal, or at least that's what Mama says. But as the day wears on, past hurts and old resentments boil to the surface, making a mess of everything. STEW explores the substance of that special stuff passed between kinswomen and how the secrets we keep from our mothers eventually become the secrets we keep from ourselves.

I saw this play at ACT Theatre in Seattle March 2024. Zora Howard does a wonderful job layering the stories of these three generations of related women. The script has a lovely rhythm, fluctuating between overlapping, chaotic dialogue, and moments where time thickens and slows, like moving through honey.

This play is incredible. I'm in awe of Zora's storytelling and how well drawn these characters are. I love this play and I hope it gets produced often.

It is the Eugene O'Neill Theater Center's pleasure to recommend Zora Howard and their play Stew as a finalist for our 2018 National Playwrights Conference. The play rose through a competitive, anonymous, multileveled selection process that took nearly nine months to execute. As one of 53 finalists out of more than 1,4200 submissions, the strength of its writing has allowed this work to prosper in such a competitive selection process.
