Apollo Flies

ONE ACT. "What if we uncrossed our stars?" wonders Juliet (or maybe Jane Eyre, or is it Anna Karenina?). In this short play, a pair of literary lovers are growing tired of their readers favorite genre--tragic romance--and are looking for some better options.

An incredibly beautiful short play that captures so well both the ridiculous nature of romance, and the obsession we can develop with characters in the stories we love. Austgen has done so well with the comparisons she brings out in the play of so many classics, but she's also given careful consideration to the theatricality within the piece. I'd love to see a fully realized production of APOLLO FLIES, it would work really well as a curtain opener for any classic play, especially a romance.

Funny, sweet, and beautiful, Austgen has created a deeply romantic, humorous, and conscious look at the romantic, tragic novels that some so eagerly consume. Every line is incredibly intentional and the ending is tender and meaningful. A carefully crafted ten minute play that does the form justice and needs to be included soon in a ten minute play festival. Especially fun for a literature buff. Highly recommended!
