In 1933, as Prohibition comes to an end and the Depression continues to devastate New York, down-and-out rumrunner Rabbit and his sibling Maggs befriend a wealthy couple. Delphi, a lesbian, and Leon, a gay man, wed each other to protect their reputations. Maggs, inspired by Delphi’s involvement in drag king culture, begins living as a man and finds work as a musician, while Rabbit enters a relationship with Leon. Maggs is determined to use this new start to find their younger siblings, who were sent to orphanages after their mother’s death, but Rabbit’s misbehavior puts their family, old and new, in jeopardy.
