Anna Considers Mars

Anna Considers Mars takes us to the not-so-distant future, where human habitability on Earth is critically threatened by climate change, obfuscated by the proliferation of vivid augmented reality. Anna competes for a slot in the first Mars colonization effort, where humankind hopes to start over with a new generation of Adams and Eves.

This play is a masterclass in speculative worldbuilding, and I am in awe of the specificity of this dramatic world! Furthermore, this play asks so many ethical questions about the continuity of the species that will keep audiences engaged and agonizing throughout the performance. The characters are highly flawed, extremely lovable, and profoundly relatable. The stakes are consistently high as one ticking clock triggers another, then another, keeping the story moving efficiently toward its bittersweet and memorable conclusion. This is a phenomenal play for those living through this moment in history, be it the best or the worst!

Anna is a struggling "uncharismatic animal" preservationist who gets selected for a unique opportunity to go to Mars. Funny, smart, compelling take on a near-future dystopia. Interesting characters dealing with difficult moral questions that feel particularly relevant - climate change, augmented reality, advanced medical treatment (and its cost!), space travel and both the guilt and beauty of being human collide in this strange, adventurous, simultaneously defeatist yet optimistic play. Would love to see it staged!

This is a fascinating play of the future. I really believe in and understand this world this writer has created. The augment makes total sense, and is thrilling for its theatricality. A cool story.
