STAN is a fantastical, quasi retelling of Servant of Two Masters based on a real life dinosaur, a real life auction, and a rumored feud. It tells the story of Maxine, a personal bidder working for a big auction house, who is called upon by two high profile celebrities to bid on the same lot— a T Rex fossil named STAN. Along the way, we watch as Maxine struggles with the effects that her choices have on her perception of her job, her place in the universal order, and on her relationship with long time partner, Charlie. Through prehistoric asides, childish taunting, and dangerous games, STAN, at its core, warns us about the dangers of locking away our most priceless histories to collect dust. The privatization of knowledge is an egregious crime— art, history, and knowledge should not be a trophy to be vied for by the richest of the rich. It should not be hidden away in private collections. It should be on display for all to see, learn from, and admire. We must not let them hide our brightest lights under the rich man’s bushels.
