Sheila drives her disturbed adoptive son Nate across the country. Nebraska has a Safe Haven law, which allows parents to leave their children at hospitals, no questions asked. Also in the car is nine-year-old Miri, her adoptive daughter. As the miles tick away, the layers of Sheila and Nate’s complicated relationship peel apart. Halfway, Nebraska explores the limits of hope and what it means to love someone who may be too far damaged to save.

I was fortunate to listen to two readings of an earlier version of this play. I highly recommend this play for production. You may not agree with Sheila's objective, but you can't keep your eyes off her. She's an extraordinary character, a great challenging role for an actor. This play is brutal, intense, shocking, at times offensive, but that is what makes for memorable theatre. A fine example of necessary theatre.
